Taylor Hill , Cawthorne , near Darton , Barnsley , Yorks.

Near Barnsley Yorkshire : Taylor Hill , Cawthorne parish . A lovely old time country lane in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England.

Interesting Information .

In Cawthorne , a Museum Society was founded in 1884 by the Rev. Charles Tiplady Pratt the then vicar of the parish . The Reverend particularly encouraged his parish youth towards studies of natural history , forming them into groups to study and collect flowers, fossils, shells , grasses and birds eggs ( activities that all classess of Victorians were most enthusiastic about and which are now strictly illegal ) , and also to study astronomy and the weather.

In the winter months when practical outdoor activities were not possible the villagers' practical studies were replaced by what were termed "winter season lectures" - otherwise known as penny readings..

The aquired collections of specimens were housed in an old cottage, one of two which stood on the site of the present building - the other being used as a meeting house for the Primitive Methodists.

The little museum was open on Saturday evenings . Admissions cost 1 penny to non-members but were free to non-members . According to the parish magazine of the time the facility was popular .
