The Magic of the Lamp

"Rub the lamp? Okay, I'll give it a shot."

 

This is a simple piece, but I think it effectively conveys the magic of the show. Viewed from an unassuming angle, two humble subjects find themselves in the presence of something very extraordinary. Shot during the "Friend Like Me" segment of Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular, I noticed Aladdin was taking a moment to take everything in, the lamp resting by his side. I was curious to see what the lamp would look like set against a backdrop of jumping Genies and a cavorting Carpet. I managed to catch this frame just as Carpet cavorted over to a trapdoor to disappear in a puff of smoke, and thus a happy accident was born in my camera.

 

I find it remarkable and pleasantly surprising that after seeing the show so many times I can still stumble upon a fresh and fantastic idea now and again. It's amazing how many different ways there are to look at something and disappointing that we only choose to look at a few. Clearly there is more to Aladdin than meets the eye.... just like the lamp.
