Bateleur Eagle, female

Wild South Africa

Kruger National Park

This female is paired to the male I posted a few days ago. Bateleur eagles mate for life and may use the same nest for many years. The female, which is larger than the male, lays a single egg. The fledgling remains in the vicinity of the nest for several months after it hatches. The male has a broad, black band under its wings while the female has mainly white feathers, as can be seen here, with only a small strip of black. This makes it easy to identify them in flight.
