Rietvlei dam was built during the great depression and is fed by the Sesmyl (Six Mile) Spruit, five fountains and five boreholes.
The city council of Pretoria planned the reserve ecologically and introduced a number of game species to it. The Nature Reserve was proclaimed in 1948. Rietvlei dam provides Pretoria with 15% of it's water. The reserve covers an area of 3800 hectares and supports presently 1600 head of game, including blesbuck, black wildebeest, red hartebeest, eland, Burchell's zebra, waterbuck, reedbuck, springbuck, mountain reedbuck, steenbuck and grey duiker.
There are an estimated 319 bird species that visit the reserve, of which 272 species have been confirmed.
