viale galileo 3.22.11 - 66

san miniato al monte from viale galileo

san miniato, with one of the best unspoiled views in florence, was built in 1018 over the christian martyr st. minias. the facade is designed in the romanesque style with a geometric design of green, gray and white marble, and a statue on the gable of an eagle carrying cloth symbolizes the arte di calimala [wool guild] who financed the church.

the bell tower [baccio d'agnolo, 1523] was never finished and had cannons installed to defend against the medici troops during the siege of florence.

surrounding the church is a cemetery filled with tombs the size of small houses and other grave sites.
