The invisible cage, the silent cry
Being a female in Bangladesh means a battered young maid with black swollen eyes, and habitually beaten up. The torture of domestic help - specifically minor girls- is too frequent an occurrence in this country for any such incident to warrant surprise.
Being a female in Bangladesh means a woman suffering from chronic abuse, torture and violence in their homes as wives. In addition to torture which causes serious physical injury- domestic violence also takes other forms such as emotional abuse and marital rape.
In Bangladesh, about 942 females were raped from January to December in 2018. But within January to June of the current year, 2019, the number of rape incident reached 731, the report said. The total number of violence against women were 3,918 last year, but in the halfway of this year it came to 2,083 which is alarming.
Being a female means searching for freedom within families, not freedom from families. Women want to find the 'I' within the 'We' as they navigate the world inside and outside their homes. Freedom is the hotbed of choice, decision-making and desire. A young woman making a decision is engaging in a dangerous political act. It signals moving away from the 'We', the family and community, to the 'I'. Hence, a girl making an independent decision is considered as dangerous. A woman's 'self ' is the sacrifice to the family, polity, economy and society. Since this cultural sacrifice cannot be seen clearly or acknowledged, women blame themselves. They become the only self-blaming and self-hating species. This too keeps women in their place.
Abused as the female offspring
Abused as the worker
Abused as the wife
Abused as the daughter
Abused for being a female
