Athabasca Falls Morning Fog

Athabasca Falls is not far from the town of Jasper in Jasper National Park. From Jasper it is easy to combine a visit to the falls with a drive down 93A and hike around Mt Edith Cavell area.

The falls do not have a long vertical drop (only 23 metres) but the river flow can be quite high and the falls are powerful over a quartzite rock layer below which a canyon has been carved into softer limestone.

These falls have been a real challenge for me to photograph. I've seen lots of professional photos that are astounding but this is definitely one of those locations that amateurs can suffer at. Unlike some park areas where you can almost point and shoot at the right time of day and duplicate a professional, these falls are a real mother. I'm sure lots of my flickr contacts would have a great time and come away with real gems, while I'm left cursing after another failed visit.

The light is never right, the viewing platforms are in poor locations, there are too many tourists, you can't keep the spray off the lens....

On this day, we were the first ones at the falls. I decided to try to get something different than the usual standard shot and got this one of the top of the falls in a fog.

By the way, for those visiting these falls - and this is one of the most popular destinations for tourists - please be careful. This is a dangerous area and several people have lost their lives here. Stay inside the fences, please.
