Confidence

"Real confidence requires self-knowledge, which includes recognizing one's shortcomings as well as one's strengths."

- Virginia Postrel

Coyotes have a bad reputation. Say, 'coyote' and most people automatically think of some scrawny, scraggly, garbage scrounging varmint. The reason for this reputation is probably because coyotes are extremely intelligent and can adapt to live in urban environments, where they live off human scraps.

Contrary to this reputation is the wild coyote, which is a skilled hunter. They will hunt in pairs or small groups for larger prey, such as deer or as individuals, for smaller targets, such as rabbits and mice. Coyotes are even known to team up with badgers to dig up rodents.

Interestingly, when hunting larger prey, wolves approach and attack from behind, with a pack running their prey to exhaustion. In contrast, coyotes approach from the front and go right for their prey's throat. So, think about their hunting skill versus their reputation as dumpster divers.

The coyote is related to wolves and foxes and falls between those two species in size. From a distance they look very similar to grey wolves but can be differentiated by their larger ears and long, bushy tails.

Next time you think of 'coyote' as a thin, scrawny, dim-witted animal like the one portrayed in the road runner cartoons (complete with anvil dropped on head), instead try to picture an intelligent, wild animal with a healthy coat that looks similar to your german shepard.
