Wild Louisiana Iris

Best: View On Black

An iris from Audubon Park. One of the wild iris' found in this portion of the state. This has been a good year for them as they can be found in many places right now. However, they will soon lose their blooms. After Hurricane Katrina caused an influx of salt water that caused them not to bloom for a couple years but the last two or three years they have started blooming much better. The fresh water has flushed much of the salt from the area. Actually, there are five species of the genus -'Iris' that are found locally: Iris hexagona, Iris fulva, Iris brevicaulis, Iris giganticaerulea, and Iris nelsonii. Not sure of this species pictured above.
