Bridge Over Flowing Waters...

This is the Moonshine Bridge on State Highway Two, a curved two lane structure built in 1987 as part of State Highway 2, which sweeps over the Hutt River in the Upper Hutt ‘suburb’ of Trentham, skirting (as it does) the picturesque Trentham Memorial Park (behind the bridge).

S.H.2 carries traffic north out of Wellington to the Hutt Valley suburbs and on to Masterton and the Wairarapa region, Napier, Opotiki, Whakatane and ultimately Tauranga before finally rejoining State Highway One south of Auckland.

The two lane bridge – with a sweeping right-hand curve approaching the bridge and an equally sweeping left hand curve when exiting – has been the scene of many serious motor vehicle accidents, and is the only part of the highway in this vicinity that doesn't have a Safety Barrier of some sort separating north and south-bound traffic (simply because the bridge is to narrow to accommodate such a feature!

As for Trentham Memorial Park... In 1841 John Barton purchased a large area of land beside the Hutt River, and named it “Trentham” after his childhood home in England. Much of his land was cleared of thick forest, but significant tracts of that forest survived, (reminders of the tawa–podocarp forest that once covered the Valley’s floor), and in 1950 these blocks were purchased and set aside as a memorial to those killed or injured in World War 2.
