LAFD Seminar: Lithium-Ion and Electric Vehicle Fire Safety

LAFD personnel gathered at the Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center in early November for a specialized seminar focused on the emerging challenges of lithium-ion and electric vehicle fires. In partnership with the LAFD Joint Hazard Assessment Team and researchers from the Fire Safety Research Institute, the training highlighted what firefighters need to know as EVs and battery-powered technology become more common on our streets and in our homes.

Through classroom presentations, real-world case studies, and hands-on learning, members explored fire behavior, tactical considerations, cooling methods, EMS considerations for battery-related injuries, and safety strategies designed to protect both responders and the community.

The seminar is part of LAFD’s ongoing effort to keep firefighters up to date on evolving hazards and practical response strategies.
