DESTRUCTION IN STEPANAKERT
Dikran Derderyan sifts through the webbing attached to the warhead of a Russian-made "Smerch" rocket which struck a house on a hill in a residential section of Stepanakert, close to the city's military hospital. The Smerch deploys dozens of lethal cluster bombs while airborne which indiscriminately kill and destroy people and buildings over a wide-ranging area. Derderyan explained that nearly every building seen in the photo had been damaged, either from the initial blast or from the shrapnel from the individual cluster bombs. (*The first floor of the apartment building (second building from the left, and approximately 200 yards away) is the nursery school shown in the first photo of this series.)
