Fishers Gap Overlook

This is the Fishers Gap Overlook along Skyline Drive. We park here whenever we walk down the Rose River Fire Road.

On Saturday morning, the four-day's worth of stormy weather was finally moving off. The changing weather made for dramatic sky conditions along Skyline Drive. The ridge of mountains you can see peeking out at the very top of the shot is over in West Virginia.

There are a lot of places along Skyline Drive where there is no place to pull over. I'm convinced that they built the overlooks at all the wrong places. When Adam and I are out, I often have him drop me off somewhere along the road. He comes back about 15 minutes later to collect me after I'm done taking photos.

This particular Saturday, he dropped me off. I got out all my gear, set up my tripod, got out my circular polarizer, my GND filter, my shutter release, etc, etc, etc. Basically, everything in my bag was laid out on my rain fly. I was just setting up my first shot when I see Adam tearing back down the road. He rolled down the window and shouted "Get in the car, there's a bear about 100 yards down the road." I quickly and messily packed all my gear, swapped to my telephoto and got to the bear's location just as he waddled over the crest of the hill down into the woods. Oh well... I think the clouds on this morning are just as cool as any bear.
