Rhynie 7 (The Rhynie Man)
The 'Rhynie Man' is the 5th Pictish Stone (out of the present total of 8) to have been discovered in and around the village of Rhynie in Aberdeenshire, north-east Scotland. The image of a stern looking male figure branding an axe is carved onto the 1.78m tall gabbro slab. This single figure stone carving is very unique to Pictish carvings, and possibly represents an important figure from the Pictish society it was carved in, or possibly even someone from Pictish legend. The stone was found (ploughed out of the ground) in 1978 by a farmer to the south of Rhynie, and is now located in the entrance foyer of the Grampian regional council offices at Woodhill House, Aberdeen.
