keira as the mysterious alien 'glisette'
every once in a while i trot out my alt keira to play a supporting part in kyle’s sci-fi adventures. in this instance, keira is the unusual and powerful and strange alien entity known as Glisette, standing inside a long abandoned spacecraft from some other alien species. i used this ‘set’ for a short event that began and ended at Botany Bay (SLurl: slurl.com/secondlife/botany%20bay/105/95/27/ )
i have tried to make Glisette very alien, alien in outlook and motivation, though not necessarily alien in appearance. she often appears human, but in this particular shot, i have emphasized her alien nature with weird, unusual eyes. Glisette is not organic, she is not a machine, she is life of an entirely different nature. of course she isn’t really a ‘she’ either, but just as i have her taken a human form most of the time, she takes a human female form (i’d feel weird playing a male).
so what is Glisette?
she is an entity of hyperspace, what i call a Quis. her mind is a vast array of microwormholes that intersect with our reality, other realities similar to ours, other realities vastly different from ours, realities of 3 or 4 or 5 or 7 big spatial dimensions, realities or more than 1 temporal dimensions, and who knows how much more. Glisette’s mind is so vast compared to that of a baseline human, that the term ‘mind’ doesn’t even really apply. she can create numerous individual consciousnesses, set them inside avatars and send them out exploring, so that they can interact with such lowly beings as mere humans, while also maintaining a connection back to her main hyperspatial “body.” (a better term than avatar is ‘scion’ as used in Orion’s Arm. and she can do this for more than humans, she can, and does, create avatars for species very different such as those who live in cold ammonia seas (like on Titan, say), or in the very high temperature and pressure of a hot Jupiter, or to go among the wispy molecular thin creatures that ride the magnetic fields in deep interstellar space.
the idea for an entity like Glisette came from reading various post-human science fiction, and in this case, especially the Orion’s Arm shared universe (see OrionsArm.com). Glisette is, in the Orion’s Arm terminology, the equivalent of a transapient who has passed the first toposophic singularity. (Glisette is related to an entity of the second toposophic singularity, an NPC, which i call a Maius, that uses the metallic hydrogen core of a gas giant as its ‘avatar’).
i have tried to make Glisette like one of these transpients, one who is “utterly beyond the comprehension of ordinary [humans]. They may appear completely ‘normal’ for long periods of time, perhaps in part because of the constraints under which all [humans] live and in part because they choose to appear so, but eventually a transapient will act in some completely alien way, for reasons that may or may not be explicable to a [human]. They have access to technologies and media that ordinary sapient beings cannot imagine or understand, and will use even simple and familiar things in unexpected but highly effective ways.” (taken from: www.orionsarm.com/eg-topic/45c53f5eca9d9 )
Glisette the rp character
this is all fine and dandy, but the real constraint here is that while Glisette may be a vastly intelligent, hyperspatial entity, i am not, and there are the realities of rp. i play Glisette as if she were vastly powerful, but in practical rp, she isn’t going to be blasting other players with impunity. so when i play Glisette, i try to work her as having arcane information about strange parts of the universe in such a way that someone who doesn’t want to buy into it can just ignore it. if possible, though, i like to have some payoff for those who do buy into the idea of Glisette, and most recently i did this by staging a mini-event where Glisette brought some players from Botany Bay to a mysterious, ancient alien spaceship.
The other practical “power” Glisette has is the ability to shapeshift. Her avatars are composed of ‘morphic blocks’, which are something like replicators from Stargate, and liquid metal from Terminator 2. Glisette can shift into a metallic humanoid form, and also some very different types such as the form of a sentient jelly-fish like alien, or a spherical floating mechanical-like probe thingy.
Glisette is one of those rp characters who is potentially extremely powerful, so i have also made sure to include some weaknesses. For those few (if any) who have managed to read through all this verbiage, i’ll mention a couple: Glisette has a strong interest in very ancient cultures and relics, especially those with some bearing on the nature of the mysterious Dawn Hunters. She wants these things – or some of these things – very badly. She is very fond of her relics and would come close to panicking (or at least, it would seem like that) if someone were truly capable of destroying her ancient tablets. Her avatar can also be disrupted with certain types of weapons. Regular lasers and phasers and bullet spewing guns are not going to do more than inconvenience her, but weapons of the type Commander Kyle usually carries will disrupt her avatar (although it won’t harm the larger hyperspatial entity). Just ask Kyle and she’ll let you know which weapons are effective.
