Superlative Land
In a year all together different than this one, the San Andreas Fault and the Temblor Range of mountains are covered in an incredible display of wildflowers. The middle range of hills here marks that iconic fault, as the friction from its strike slip action causes the crust to buckle. It makes the landscape interesting, and then when conditions are just right that already interesting landscape explodes with color. I can only guess at the number of yellow hillside daisies that sprung up in 2023. And little accents of purple phacelia dot here and there. Whenever I’ve been fortunate enough to witness such super blooms, I have been ever fascinated by where the flowers grow and where they don’t, for instance favoring northern slopes as opposed to southern slopes of the same ridges. Carrizo Plain National Monument is a treasure, and I sure hope the hostile new administration doesn’t try to sell it off. Our public lands are one of the most unique and treasured things we have ever invented in this country, and they must be protected for benefit of all and not exploited for the benefit of a few.
