What a View
Split Rock Lighthouse, on the North Shore of Minnesota overlooking might Lake Superior, has quite a view and is also lovely to behold. When it was built in 1910 there were no roads to it and so all of the construction materials, as well as supplies for the keeper, had to be brought in via the lake and then lifted up the 160' cliff by a crane. It was built in response to the famous Mataafa Storm of 1905 during which 29 ships were lost or damaged on Superior. It moved to an inactive status in 1961. However each year on November 10th Split Rock emits a light in memory of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald which sunk on that date in 1975, and in honor of which Gorden Lightfoot wrote his haunting, powerful ballad (here's a link: www.google.com/search?sca_esv=3e9c5b5807ad45a8&sca_up...). It is an amazing spot to visit with wonderful hikes and tours of the lighthouse. Actually would highly recommend spending a week and taking in the entire north shore up to the border with Canada. There are a total of 8 state parks, 17 waterfalls and rivers and 18 scenic overlooks to enjoy.
