A Black Winged Kite getting ready for a morning hunt

A resident kite of the country and a common bird of the countryside in our state. They dot the countryside and are sighted perched on trees, wires and on posts in the fields hunting for small rodents and reptiles in the fields.

This is one of the few raptors that hover while hunting - much like the Eurasian Kestrel. They hover in the air for almost 30-60 seconds slowly descending down and from around 45-50 feet, they would suddenly dive onto the prey. The success rate is quite low from what I have seen, but they do hunt a lot.

Shot this next to a country road while driving to a birding place. The area was teeming with small birds like Baya Weavers, Prinia's and White Eyes - all favorite of the Black Kite for hunitng.
