A Common Snipe landing on the edge of a dry lake

A beautiful migratory bird with an intricate pattern on the body. They are remarkable for their pretty long beak and disappearing so easily in the fields and grass. The birds tend to stick to the ground in grass maybe around half a foot tall - and when they are spotted, they just disappear.

These are migratory birds from Europe and winter here in South India. The birds are found on the edges of lakes, rivers and small ponds - usually in swampy muddy areas that are difficult to trudge. So we wait patiently for them to fly or do some action. This was shot on the edge of a lake which had plenty of swampy mud area. I didn't see them, but was trying to shoot some ducks when two of these just flew right under my feet surprising me! Luckily, I was able to get some good flight shots of the bird though I don't have a decent still shot!
