The smallest bird of India - A Pale Billed Flowerpecker - relishing a wild berry

This is the smallest bird in India, just around 8 cms and tough to shoot due to its really small size. I found an area where they are found easily and in the right season, they are easy to shoot at the fruiting plants.

There was a wild berry tree - the berries are dark red and maybe 0.5 cm in diameter. The Flowerpecker consumed several of these late in the evening and hence gave me an opportunity to get close. The pink juice from the berry colored its beak as it slowly crushed the berry to force it into its mouth. A nice memorable scene.

These birds are insectivores preferring the small tree based insects and spiders. They have many predators like the Orioles, Kingfishers, Crows, Shrikes etc.. which are abundant here and easily kill these birds by shaking them vigorously and then consuming them.
