The Serpent and the Aegis house - firewall
Old fashioned as this house might be, it does have a firewall. It is meant to prevent a fire leaping from one roof to the neighbouring one, and in some periods of history such a wall was mandatory. Rain water had to be disposed of by means of a very short drain, from where it fell on the street. On the other side of the house there is no drain - and no gutter either.
Whereas on the front of the house the ground floor chamber is very high (more than 4 meter), at the back there is an entresol ('insteek' or 'hangkamer' in Dutch) above the kitchen, providing a bedroom. It has one small window at the back, with one half an open hole with a shutter and the other half having stained glass.
The chimney has an open flue from bottom to top. The second chimney is not visible from the outside because of the plastered wall, but has an open flue as well from kitch to top.
