Acupuncture Collage - Macro HDR

About Acupuncture:

This is a simple demonstration of an acupuncture treatment using a single point, He Gu. This point, also known as Large Intestine 4 (LI4), is mainly used for pain relief and intestinal problems but can also be used for the treatment of head and throat inflammatory complaints, such as sore throats, eye pain and headaches.

He Gu is a forbidden point during pregnancy as it is known to cause miscarriages when strongly stimulated in conjunction with a separate point near the ankle, San Yin Chiao (Spleen 6.)

About the photo: (view the large version)

My goal was to attempt the HDR process and end with a ''realistic'' looking image rather than the vivid but fantastic images often associated with HDR, especially when architecture is the subject.

This was also my first attempt to combine macro photography with HDR. You can see that there is some blurring of the acupuncture needle in the last image. Acupuncture needles are really more akin to thin flexible wires that continued to oscillate during the 3 exposures I took for each picture. I also had some difficulty holding my hand perfectly still while manipulating the needle, which is evidenced by an artifact of my thumb in the fourth shot.

By the way, that's my own right hand treating my left. I was also the photographer, aided by my camera's EV bracketing and timer functions.

Overall I think the HDR images turned out well enough. I ended up with an acceptable exposure of my hands, the needles, and the wooden table underneath without the overall image looking to ''cartoony.''

I know you're probably wondering, and no, the treatment isn't painful. :)
