I think HDR really lends itself well to black and white photography. The sort of rich detail enhancement possible with tonemapping can have an undesirable halo effect in color work, but since black and white photography has an inherand unreality to it in the first place, the sort of micro-detail enhancement HDR allows can have a really interesting effect.
