Southern Ground-Hornbill portrait

Maasi Mara, Kenya, Africa

The Southern Ground-Hornbill, which is found in the savannas of eastern Africa, is the largest and heaviest of the hornbills. The primary food of this ground-dwelling bird is arthropods such as grasshoppers, beetles, scorpions and termites. They will also eat larger prey such as snakes, lizards and rats.

The female Southern Ground-Hornbill can be identified by the blue patch on the red throat skin. Those long eyelashes would certainly be the envy of many women!

The Southern Ground-hornbill is considered vulnerable because of significant declines in areas where they encounter human density, tree felling and use of poisons and pesticides. Conservationists are currently considering the possibility of collecting second-hatched chicks for reintroduction programs.
