NGC6604 in Serpens (September 2025)
Object: NGC6604 and surrounding nebulosity in Serpens (SHO Palette) (September 2025)
This is a busy field of view to be sure. The highlight is NGC 6604, a young, compact open cluster of stars in the constellation of Serpens, positioned just north of the Eagle Nebula (NGC 6611). The cluster is located at a distance of 4,580 light years from our Sun.
NGC6604 is still undergoing star formation and it lies at the heart of an H II region with the identifier S54. The cluster has an estimated age of 6.5 million years and contains several massive stars of the OB type. One of the stars is the high mass triple star system HD 167971 and is one of the most luminous stars in the galaxy.
Also included in the FOV:
-NGC6625 - an Open Cluster in the Scutum constellation
-SH2-53 (lower left corner) a group of small bright nebula.
-SH2-54- an extended bright nebula in the constellation of Serpens.
