Assaf Kintzer
Adam and Eve naked standing together, he touches her breast, a serpent wound around the tree, rabbits at lower left.
Woodcut made by Hans Baldung, Germany, 1511.
► In this woodcut Baldung was the first to allude to the erotic nature of the fall of man while imparting to the figures a palpable sense of their vulnerability. Wearing a seductive smile Eve looks directly towards the viewer, engaging us in the scene. The rabbits below allude to their sexual laxity and the serpent, no longer tame, hisses at them. Also unusual is Eve's position in front of Adam, whereas in traditional representations they are shown side by side, equally responsible for their condition. The bold inscription on the tablet, Lapsus Humani Generis ('the Fall of Mankind'), hangs directly above their heads.
