The Battle of Missionary Ridge - CBC 2016
After their defeat at the Battle of Chickamagua, the Union army in the west was besieged in Chattanooga, Tennessee by the Confederate Army of the Tennessee, which held key high positions around the city.
On November 25, 1863 the Union Army of the Cumberland, was ordered by General U.S. Grant to advance and take the rifle pits at the base of the Confederate-held Missionary Ridge. After taking the first Confederate line, Union forces were exposed to heavy fire from the top of the ridge. Without clear orders, the Army of the Cumberland began climbing the ridge to escape the withering fire. In one of the most stunning incidents of the war, the Union army charged up the steep slope and carried the position at the top, sending the Confederate forces fleeing. This incredible defeat of an entrenched enemy on high ground was unequaled during the war, where frontal assault was usually disastrous. It broke the siege of Chattanooga and ended Confederate control of Tennessee.
