Bede House Wood

Tucked away in a quiet corner of a wood at the base of Bennachie, you could be forgiven for stepping over some fairly unassuming rises in mossy floor without noticing how they form the plan of what once was a historic equivalent of a care home for the elderly or poor: a bede house. Even when the Ordnance Survey came past in 1866-67, they appended '(remains of)' to the mark on the map, so it's not surprising that the physical traces are as sparse as the documentation of the place.

It is understood that at some point, four poor men lived here, in what were a set of very small houses, each with it's own "yardie"; each man entitled to "a peck of meal, and half-a-peck of malt each", per week. There were women too, the comprised the last two inhabitants.
