Isthmus Dawn
Ten hours ago, we tramped along that track, weary from hauling quarter of our body weight up to this point in the hope of having it carry us off the hill this morning. Ten minutes ago, the sun rose over the horizon; the day was starting to look good. It was luxury to camp on a hill tht not only had flat pitchings but enough topsoil to tether my tent; more often I find myself cursing my lightweight 'accupuncture needle' pegs as they fail miserably against the fairly barren, rocky south Island ground.
In ten minutes, we should have really launched into the smooth morning air. Little did we know that the cloud below us would spread across most of Lake Hawea, leaving us in a sense stranded on the peak, our knees pondering walking all the way back down if a gap didnt appear. In the end, we waited it out, enjoyed the views and the ebbing and flowing of the clouds below us, before they eventually granted us safe passage back to the valley below.
