Northern Cardinal

Texas Cardinals have something special in their water - they are CONSIDERABLY brighter than their east coast counterparts. I had to reduce the saturation in the red to bring out the detail - even though the picture was slightly underexposed!

The green branch in the background belongs to a mesquite tree.

Thank you everyone for your very kind comments. I need to do a shameless plug here. This was taken at the Martin Ranch in Edinburg, Texas in the lower Rio Grande Valley. Audrey and John Martin make their living by conserving the ranch - restoring the habitat to its original native state, and making it a wonderful place for birders and bird photographers. If you're in Texas please visit them - the usual end-of-life alternative for ranches, another housing tract or shopping center can be prevented by your support of ecotourism.
