Pemberton Hall- 1741- Salisbury MD

nrhp # 71000379-

Pemberton Historical Park is home to one of the first 18th Century plantation houses built in Wicomico County known as Pemberton Hall. In 1741, Pemberton Hall was built by Colonel Isaac Handy, one of the founders of the City of Salisbury, and his wife Anne Dashiell Handy.

Pemberton Hall was built in the typical Eastern Shore plantation house style with one of the earliest dated gambrel roof in the Chesapeake Region. The Hall was recently restored to its original beauty with great attention paid to interior detail, due in part to extensive research and archeological excavations at Pemberton Park. Researchers were able to provide details right down to the hue of the paint color on the walls.

Recently, an excavation at Pemberton Historical Park revealed one of the earliest wharves built on the Chesapeake Bay. Built in 1747, this massive wharf was constructed using 200 foot pine timbers from Handy's land. The reconstruction of this spectacular wharf along with outbuildings, snake fences, orchards and gardens is currently underway at Pemberton Historical Park.
