Still Life with Ming Bowls (after Jan Jansz)
The Dutch still life painters frequently planted symbolism in their works.
Some scholars believe every Still Life is a Vanitas image, reminding us of our mortality.
The original painting this is based on by Jan Jansz doesn’t appear to have any obvious symbolism, so I added some.
The grape leaves vary from young and perfect to mature but about to be eaten away by a caterpillar and an older somewhat threadbare leaf somewhat obscured in the shadows.
The ever so slightly blemished Raspberry has been removed from the bowl and is clearly about to be discarded.
I must be getting old!
There's more symbolism tucked away, and you will probably find some, that I haven't seen. Because what you see depends on where you stand.
