Still Life with Beans after Giovanna Garzoni

This is very different to my usual style. I saw some lovely beans on the weekend that reminded me of the work of Giovanna Garzoni (1600–1670).

Unlike the Dutch who celebrated variety in their still life paintings, Giovanna tended to paint one type of fruit or vegetable and loved chipped dishes and chewed vegetables.

Her gouaches are truly wonderful and impossible to duplicate photographically.
