Helena Blavatsky Before and After
Helena Blavatsky was a 19th century medium, author, founder of the Theosophical Society. She leaves an ambiguous legacy; she was apparently caught forging letters from "ascended masters" which would appear in a cabinet whose back opened up into her bedroom. She was was an early medicinal marijuana user, taking them for menstrual cramps.
I recently retouched this painting after reading that she had "piercing blue eyes" and I added a few tweaks while I was at it. The painting is based on a public domain black and white photo reproduced in Colin Wilson's "The Occult, a History," among other places.
