Bamboo, anyone?

Walking in the narrow, crowded streets of Hanoi's Old Quarter gave me a chance to glimpse a way of living and doing business that I'm sure is slowly, but surely being eroded.

The Old Quarters used to house merchants selling the same goods all grouped on the same street - thus most of the streets have names indicating the goods sold there. For example, the hotel I stayed in was at Hang Hanh street, which literally meant "Onion Goods" street. Traditionally there were 36 streets in the Old Quarters.

This old woman sat outside her shop selling bamboo goods along the street which still sells plenty of bamboo goods (it was Hang Vai - bamboo goods street - after all), but for how long, one wonders?
