The Burlington Tavern

Burlington Tavern in Hull. It seems there may have been some confusion or discrepancy regarding the name of the establishment over time.

In the earliest directory from 1823, it was listed as the Bridlington Tavern at 17 Manor Street.

By 1828, it appears under the name Burlington, listed at 18 Manners Street (possibly a misspelling of Manor Street).

From 1841 onwards, it is consistently referred to as the Burlington in directories, still located on Manor Street.

There is no clear evidence in the directories you provided of it ever being called the "Witnesses Arms", despite the local lore about prisoners having their last drink there before sentencing.

The names "Bass Beers" and "Worthington's Ales" were etched on the windows until their replacement in 2013, indicating the breweries that supplied the pub.

The street name Broadley Street that the 1855 directory referenced was likely changed to Alfred Gelder Street around 1900.
