USS New Jersey (BB-62): Conning Tower
This is the battleship's conning tower. It's like a bank vault on the bridge that contains the helm and other controls. It's a circular chamber protected with 17 inches of solid steel armor. There are small viewing slots set in the walls, but the helmsman couldn't see where the ship was going. That's okay though because he doesn't steer by sight anyhow. He just follows the commands of the Officer of the Deck when it comes to what speed and course to put the ship on.
The USS New Jersey (BB-62), the American Navy's most decorated battleship. It saw action in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and Operation Desert Storm. It's now a museum ship moored along the bank of the Delaware River in Camden, New Jersey.
