Ancient Hill Fort

The Clwydian range in NE Wales has the distinction of being the historic border when Offa was King. It was also an Iron Age "motorway" being up out of the climax Oak woodlands in the valley.

On this top, Pen Y Cloddiau, several levels of Iron Age ramparts enclose an area of about 20 hectares. There are two groups of hut remains in the north-eastern part of the fort and a southern entrance can still be seen with evidence of guard-chambers.

It makes a lovely walk with views of Cheshire, Merseyside, the North Wales coast and Snowdonia, all in a designated area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
