Day 67 - Grand Theft Auto III

One of the first great 18 rated games I played during my pre-teen years was the original Grand Theft Auto, followed by GTA London, and GTA II on the Playstation 1.

These games were amazingly fun yet graphically simple games on the Playstation that delivered you a world of fun without even the need to attempt to progress with the games story.

When I finally got my hands on the Playstation 2, the first 2 games I got for it were 'Burnout' and 'Grand Theft Auto III', and WOW! what an amazing kick off that was to my Playstation 2 days.

I went into Grand Theft Auto III without having seen any video's for it, or reading any reviews on it...so I didn't really have any expectations in my head going into it, although no matter what I could of imagined at the time, GTA III easily would've have surpassed them.

Grand Theft Auto III made an unprecedented impact on the "sandbox" genre of video games. The amount of fun you could have free roaming the city was seemingly unlimited. Liberty City was the most alive and happening place I'd ever seen in a video game until that time, and the amount of fun you could have within the city delivered replay value that was off the charts!

A great (and lengthy) story mode, paired with lots of side quests and in-game secrets was the real meat to the experience, and the game has set the blueprint for what we've now come to expect (and desire) in any of the series sequels that have come since.

One extra tidbit of nostalgia I have on GTA III is the fact that I actually rebought this game for PC when it was released, simply because the online mod community for this game REALLY blew the doors off on a whole new leash of afterlife and fun to be had within the GTA III game engine ^_^.

GTA III ranks high alongside games like "Super Mario 64" and "Goldeneye" as a defining jump in video game evolution, and for that it HAD to be inducted into this video game nostalgia trip I'm rolling with.

Lastly...save your "but...Vice City, but...." comments for another day, as this won't be the last you see of GTA in this photo album. GTA III ♥
