In Memoriam: Flipped Out
Windows XXII: Fisher Building, a Chicago Landmark
The CNA building (red/orange) on Wabash reflected on the windows of the Fisher Bldg. two blocks away.
The Fisher Building was completed in 1896 and is an example of the Chicago School of Architecture. The architect was Daniel Burnham, one of the nation's most prominent architects in the new Chicago School. At the time of its construction, this building was one of the tallest in the world and was erected almost entirely without masonry. It used steel as its super-structure, allowing for thinner walls and much larger windows than previously possible. The steel framework also could be erected much faster than masonry, and was less expensive. Terra cotta was used as exterior sheathing - much lighter and versatile than brick.
Designated as a Chicago landmark in 1978.
I think it is now a hotel/apartment.
