Inscription, Clare College, Cambridge

Doorway and inscription, Clare College, Cambridge, 24 Feb 2016

Paul Mellon (1907 – 1999) was an American philanthropist and Anglophile. He dispersed more than one billion US dollars in his lifetime, and significantly more after his death.

He studied at Clare College from 1929-1931.

He left a legacy of £4.4m to the college to fund capital improvements and major repairs to Old Court, the Chapel, the Bridge and Gardens. In recent years, the income from the Paul Mellon Clare Trust has been used to repair Clare Bridge (the oldest spanning the River Cam), provide the College with much-needed new kitchen facilities, and build a glasshouse to help maintain the exemplary standard of the Fellows' Garden.
