Tanning house

The fishermen's society had a branch in Hoorn called Het Taanhuis, Tanning house. The branch took over this little house with its five tanning kettles in 1897. Tanning was the proces of immersing the fishnets in taan, tannin, a preservative brown-yellow fluid.

The tanning house became obsolete with the introduction of synthetic nets which did not have to be tanned.
