Ma Jolie Ange

45:52 Recreate a famous photograph – one that you greatly admire.

I started out with a plan to do an Ansel Adams inspired shot of our local mountains. A quick fly over would have been a fun adventure with lots of potential for an interesting shot. The weather, unfortunately, didn’t cooperate. Then I began thinking about Margaret Bourke-White’s amazing work, but thought a photojournalism trip to Russia or India might be a bit too expensive. Yousuf Karsh’s photo of Audrey Hepburn popped into my mind, which then made me think of some other classy portraits I admire – Annie Leibovitz’s shots of Angelina Jolie. I’ve loved Leibovitz’s work ever since I saw her 1979 shot of Bette Midler lying in a bed of roses, taken for the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. She’s had a fascinating career and has taken so many iconic photos; it’s inspiring. There’s a lot to be learned from her conceptual portraits and whimsical approach. I set out to recreate this striking shot:

We tried a few different poses I’d found, and I decided that I liked this posted shot the best. After weeks of planning, I surprisingly realized that this one wasn’t Annie Leibovitz’s shot at all! It was actually taken by two photographers I’d never heard of, Sofia Sanchez & Mauro Mongiello. It was taken for a Newsweek photo in Dec 2011.

So much for planning!
