Chompin' on a Spruce Cone

Last year was a bumper year for the spruce cone harvest, some trees so loaded with cones that the tops broke off. Being the main food of these little guys, they have been exceptionally abundant lately. I've even had to live-trap and relocate a few. Research done here in the Yukon indicates that Red Squirrels anticipate in advance if spruce cones will be plentiful, and have large litters when the harvest is going to be abundant. Every 4 years or so, White Spruce trees do not produce any cones, creating severe hardship for these little guys.
