Blackstone Uplands

This is a view of the Blackstone Uplands in the North Ogilvie Mountains of the northern Yukon. It was an absolutely perfect mid-September afternoon, most unusual for the Dempster, infamous for its awful weather. Seen here, like a sparkling blue jewel in the tundra, is a thermokarst pond created by melting permafrost. It was so round and symmetrical, I speculated that it was once a crater left by a meteorite, but that is probably far-fetched. The spruce trees in the midground mark the course of the Blackstone River (not seen) as it winds through the tundra to join with the Ogilvie River further north. There was a First Nation grave site near the river bank (see note) looking upon the Ogilvies, such a lovely spot for a final rest.
