Dance of the Raven

With the arrival of Feburary, raven courtship season is well underway in Whitehorse, and on windy days they can be seen 300 feet above, doing pair acrobatics, riding the updraft near the cliff tops. This one came over to say hello, as I stood on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Yukon River, and did some fancy aerial stunts, almost too close for the lens at times. After feeding them every winter for more than 15 years, several of these birds likely recognize Brandy and I.

 

Considerable research has demonstrated that Ravens recognize individual human faces, and retain that memory for very long periods. Not only are they likely the most intelligent bird, but one of the world's most intelligent species, rivaling some of the higher primates in problem-solving capacity. See below:
