Cajon Pass III - multi-tractie
Treinen die vanuit Los Angeles het oosten van de Verenigde Staten willen bereiken, moeten in het zuiden van Californië de Cajon Pass oversteken, tussen de San Bernardino Mountains en de San Gabriel Mountains. Op dit traject is het een komen en gaan van lange goederentreinen, die zonder uitzondering worden getrokken door meerdere diesellocomotieven, soms geassisteerd door opdruklocomotieven aan het eind van de trein of ‘helpers’ halverwege de trein. Het traject is grotendeels viersporig, waarbij die sporen op sommige plaatsen op een behoorlijke afstand van elkaar liggen.
Op de foto een trein die getrokken wordt door maar liefst elf diesellocomotieven van de Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad, die bezig zijn met een klim naar de top van de pas die op ongeveer 1.100 meter ligt. Voor de liefhebbers: de locnummers zijn 7713, 7737, 138, 7738, 7703, 7730, 7760, 7755, 7766, 7771 en 103.
Trains heading from the Los Angeles area to the east of the United States must cross the Cajon Pass in southern California, between the San Bernardino Mountains and the San Gabriel Mountains. On this track there is a coming and going of long freight trains, which without exception are pulled by several diesel locomotives, sometimes assisted by 'helpers' at the back of the train or halfway the train. The route is largely made up of four tracks, with these tracks in some places at a considerable distance from each other.
The train in the picture is pulled by no less than eleven diesel locomotives of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad, which are climbing to the top of the pass which is at about 1,100 meters.
For the real enthusiasts: the locomotive numbers are 7713, 7737, 138, 7738, 7703, 7730, 7760, 7755, 7766, 7771 and 103.
