Sketch of the City of Keene N.H. by A.B. Heywood
The City of Keene, the youngest in N.H. and the capital of Cheshire County, is one of the finest inland cities of New England. Nestled in the charming valley of the Ashuelot, surrounded by lofty hills covered with verdure to their very tops; laid out in broad streets and avenues, bordered with stately elms and spreading maples, elegant mansions and clipped lawns; this cosmopolitan would have to search diligently to find a more attractive place of residence.
Numerous parks, beautiful groves, meandering streams, foaming waterfalls, crystal lakes and mountain cliffs, invite the attention and compel the admiration of all lovers of natural scenery.
Monadnock Mountain, 3169 feet above the sea level, whose lofty peak tempts thousands every year to scale its rugged cliffs, is only thirteen miles away by carriage drive and fifteen miles by rail and barge connection; and the drives from the city in all directions afford a picturesque variety of suburban scenes seldom found in the same area.
The views have been carefully selected from more than 200 subjects and engraved by eminent artists in Germany, at great expense.
