Photograph of Dr. Charles G. Adams house, the site of the old fort. The house was nearly opposite the Keene State College buildings that were formerly Elliot Community Hospital. The house existed from 1793-1856.
Dr. Adams, a native of Keene, was remarkably successful in his profession and built this large residence for his family of 13 children. It occupied the same area as the settlement's early fort, which was completed in 1738 and burned 9 years later by marauding Indians. Today this is 300 Main Street.
