Leah, Louie and I gathered and prepared cattails last year. We took the leaves apart, removed and threw the thick ends and discolored tips off and let the leaves dry.

I won a bundle at the Warm Springs hosted Native American Basketry Association gathering to add.

Last night we set the cattail leaves out in the rain to soften.

Today, we started weaving a mat for Jan's sweat lodge. hummingbirdstandslodge.com/November-2010.php We prepared the leaves by removing the "wings" from the thick ends with our finger nails. We bundled two cattail leaves for each row.

Sewn cattail was once used as insulation in homes.

Much thanks to Louie Thadie who taught us how to gather and weave a mat from cattails.
